POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) senior lawyer, Hamid Khan, has firmly stated that Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, being the most senior judge, is the only acceptable choice for the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. Addressing concerns over the selection process, Khan emphasized that no other judge would be acceptable for this pivotal role. His remarks come ahead of a significant National Convention scheduled for Thursday, where legal professionals plan to reject a proposed constitutional amendment that could impact the appointment process for the Chief Justice.
“We, the lawyers, are key stakeholders in this judicial system, and we do not accept any alternative court or authority in such matters,” Hamid Khan declared. He stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Supreme Court, warning that any attempts to undermine its constitutional status would be unacceptable.
Khan expressed concerns over the proposed panel of five judges for case hearings, asserting that the most senior judge of the Supreme Court must be appointed as Chief Justice. “We will not allow any mockery of institutions,” he said, highlighting that the Supreme Court’s primary duty is to address cases of public interest.
Khan also called for improvements in the court’s case management system, suggesting that if necessary, a new court be established to handle the backlog of cases. The upcoming National Convention will serve as a critical platform for lawyers to voice their opposition to any constitutional changes that threaten the authority of the judiciary.
