At least one person was killed and 16 others injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Balochistan’s Panjgur district on Monday, officials said.
Panjgur Assistant Commissioner Amir Jan confirmed that the IED was planted in a motorcycle. He said three of the injured were in serious condition, adding that two children were also among those wounded in the blast.
According to local police officials, a Frontier Corps (FC) vehicle was the probable target of the attack. However, the vehicle escaped the blast and all FC personnel remained safe.
A senior local administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Dawn that the motorcycle loaded with explosives had been parked near a pushcart in the main bazaar area, causing civilian casualties when it detonated.
Another police official said preliminary investigations suggested the explosion was carried out using a remote-control device. Security forces and law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area following the blast and launched a search operation, while the injured were shifted to nearby medical facilities.
The incident comes amid a sharp rise in militant violence across Pakistan. According to data released by the Islamabad-based Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), terrorist attacks increased by 34 per cent in 2025 compared to the previous year, while terrorism-related fatalities rose by 21 per cent.
The report recorded 699 terrorist attacks nationwide during 2025, resulting in at least 1,034 deaths and 1,366 injuries. Analysts say the upward trend in militancy has continued since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, posing serious security challenges, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
