An improvised explosive device (IED) exploded late Tuesday night outside the residence of Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Mubarak Zeb in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district, police confirmed. The blast partially damaged the house but caused no injuries, as the lawmaker was not present at the time.

Bajaur District Police Officer (DPO) Waqas Rafique told Dawn.com that the explosive device had been planted at the main gate of the house. “An IED was planted at the main gate of the MNA’s house and it exploded late at night,” he said, adding that a search operation was underway to trace those behind the attack.

Mubarak Zeb, in a statement, reassured the public that his family and neighbours were unharmed. “Such tactics won’t shake our resolve. I will continue my martyred brother Rehan Zeb’s mission,” he declared, referencing his brother who was killed in a previous targeted attack.

National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq strongly condemned the incident, expressing concern and solidarity with Zeb and his family. He urged the provincial authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions in Bajaur, a district that has seen increasing violence in recent months. In April, a roadside bomb targeted a Frontier Corps vehicle, injuring eight people, including security personnel and civilians. Just weeks later, four children were wounded when a mortar shell struck a home in Lowi Mamund tehsil.

Mubarak Zeb was elected as a PTI-backed independent candidate in the 2024 general elections but recently faced backlash from the party after voting in favour of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, defying the party’s official stance.

Authorities have not yet identified the perpetrators of the blast, but investigations are ongoing.
