Imran Khan Claims Constitutional Amendment Aimed at Keeping Him in Jail

Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has claimed that the primary objective of the government's proposed constitutional amendments is to ensure his continued imprisonment. Speaking informally with journalists from Adiala Jail, where he has been held since his arrest, Khan alleged that the amendments are part of a broader plan to weaken the judiciary and hide election fraud.

Khan stated, “They want to create a constitutional court because they are afraid of the Supreme Court.” According to the former premier, the amendments are designed to limit the judiciary's independence, thereby consolidating power within the current government and its allies.

He further warned that the future of the country is at stake, saying, "The future of the country will be destroyed by these new amendments. The purpose of these amendments is solely to keep me in jail."

Khan also criticized the current rulers for what he perceives as an attempt to undermine the judiciary to cover up alleged election manipulation. “They have decided to sink the judiciary’s raft. All this is being done to hide the election fraud,” he claimed.

The PTI founder emphasized that his party would not remain silent in the face of what he described as an attempt to suppress democratic freedoms. "They are afraid that if the elections are opened up, everything will unravel for them," he said. Khan vowed that his party would protest vigorously against these actions.

For several days, government efforts to pass these constitutional amendments have been met with resistance and delays. The proposed amendments, which would have brought significant changes to the judicial structure, have been postponed indefinitely after failing to gain the necessary support.

Last night, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif admitted that Maulana Fazlur Rehman, a key government ally, had refused to back the amendments, further delaying their passage. The lack of consensus among the ruling coalition has added to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the proposed changes.

Imran Khan’s comments add another layer of tension to an already charged political atmosphere, as both the judiciary and the political landscape of Pakistan face a pivotal moment.
