Imran Khan Directs PTI Punjab Lawmakers to Quit Standing Committees; Gohar Dismisses Rumours of Leadership Rift

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has directed the party’s lawmakers in Punjab to resign from all standing committees, extending an earlier directive that applied to the National Assembly and Senate.
Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail after meeting Khan, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said, “Khan has issued a direction regarding Punjab. We have 107 MPAs in Punjab and around 14 standing committees. Khan has also issued the directive for Punjab that our party members will resign from the memberships and chairmanships of standing committees, the way we have in the National Assembly and Senate.”
In August, Khan had instructed party members to boycott by-elections and resign from all parliamentary standing committees, including the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), following the disqualification of several PTI leaders by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) over their alleged role in the May 9 riots.
Following that decision, PTI lawmakers began resigning from parliamentary and Senate committees, but no decision had been taken regarding Punjab—until now.
When asked about rumours of his removal as party chairman, a day after Ali Amin Gandapur was reportedly told to step down as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, Gohar dismissed the claims as “just rumours.”
“There is no issue of my chairmanship. The party is stable,” he asserted.
Commenting on the developments in KP, Gohar quoted Imran Khan as calling Gandapur “one of my few loyal allies,” saying the PTI founder respected his loyalty but believed any operation against terrorism “without a political strategy would fail.”
“Whatever operation you carry out, any collateral damage in it further radicalises people. That is why Khan said our party, government, and province cannot afford this, so we were wanting some drastic change,” Gohar explained.
He added that Khan wanted the transition in the KP government to be completed swiftly, assuring that the provincial cabinet would continue, while the new government lineup would be finalised under Imran Khan’s direction.
