Imran Khan Urges COAS to Reevaluate Policies Amid Political Instability

PTI Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan has written to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir, highlighting the need to reevaluate current policies that he claims have widened the rift between the public and the establishment. Interim PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan announced this during a media briefing on Monday.

According to Gohar, the letter, set to be made public later today, addresses several pressing national issues, including alleged election rigging, judicial interference, media restrictions, and the suppression of political dissent.

Concerns Over Widening Public-Establishment Gap
Imran's letter reportedly emphasizes how specific decisions are fostering mistrust between the establishment and the people. The PTI founder highlighted issues such as the conduct of the February 8 elections, which he described as "rigged" to impose a "minority government" over the people's majority mandate.

The letter also criticized the 26th constitutional amendment, alleging that it undermined judicial independence to protect political interests. He expressed concern over court delays, specifically citing the Al-Qadir Trust case, which he claimed was influenced by "court packing" tactics.

Social Media Restrictions and Economic Impact
Imran also warned against recent amendments to the Peca Act, which he said aimed to silence dissent by restricting internet access and social media usage. PTI lawyer Faisal Chaudhry added that the IT industry was at risk due to these restrictions, potentially jeopardizing Pakistan’s GSP+ status.

Increased Focus on Political Suppression
Imran pointed out that national security institutions, tasked with combating terrorism, were instead being directed to "crush PTI." He alleged this shift had led to a resurgence in terrorism, drawing parallels to the security situation in 2013.

Judiciary and Human Rights Violations
The letter further highlighted concerns over the judiciary’s independence, daily threats to journalists, and violations of human rights, blaming state forces for hindering court orders.

Call for Change
Imran urged security institutions to recognize the need for immediate policy changes to stabilize the country, emphasizing free and fair elections, rule of law, respect for human rights, and a free media as crucial solutions.

He asserted that his duty as a former prime minister was to highlight threats to the nation, calling on all stakeholders to prioritize the country's future over political rivalries.

The letter was accompanied by extensive documentation, including photographs, medical reports, court orders, and other records to substantiate claims of state oppression against PTI workers.

This communication comes after Imran's repeated grievances over the Supreme Court's failure to address his petitions on election laws and human rights violations.
