POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has called for responsible governance and criticized the government's policies, including the handling of constitutional amendments, relations with Afghanistan, and the regulation of religious seminaries.
During a visit to the Parliamentary Reporters Association (PRA) office, the JUI-F leader shared his concerns about the current political and security situation in the country.
Constitution as a "Nose of Wax"
Maulana Fazlur Rehman expressed his frustration with the way powerful circles manipulate the Constitution. "It is surprising that the Constitution, which is supposed to run the country, is treated as a nose of wax that can be twisted in any direction," he remarked.
He emphasized that laws, including the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), should be made with input from stakeholders, particularly journalists. "Despite assurances, the President signed the PECA amendment bill under pressure," he noted.
Security and Governance Concerns
Highlighting the deteriorating security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, the JUI-F chief lamented the government's inability to maintain writ in these regions. "Armed groups roam freely, and streets are handed over to them at night. We feel pain when our soldiers are martyred," he said.
Proxy Wars and Relations with Afghanistan
Maulana Fazlur Rehman criticized Pakistan's history of involvement in proxy wars. "We have hollowed ourselves out by fighting proxy wars. Now we are spoiling relations with Afghanistan," he warned.
He questioned whether religious seminaries were being unfairly targeted under international pressure and highlighted the challenges faced by tribal areas following their integration into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Religious Seminaries and Constitutional Integrity
The JUI-F leader defended religious seminaries, stating that they have always stood by the Constitution and the parliament. "We must recognize their positive role and address their concerns without targeting them unfairly," he urged.
Economic Concerns and FATF Pressure
Addressing economic challenges, Maulana Fazlur Rehman predicted a decline in GDP and the devaluation of the rupee. He criticized the government's handling of FATF-related issues, arguing that politicians and religious seminaries are being unfairly blamed for money laundering.
Call for Political Dialogue and National Integrity
Concluding his remarks, the JUI-F chief emphasized the need for political dialogue and national integrity. "Decisions should not be left to a handful of individuals. Politicians must be engaged, and democracy must be safeguarded," he asserted.
