Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan has written a detailed letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Yahya Afridi, and the Acting Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, Justice Sarfaraz Dogar, raising concerns over his legal battles and the state of constitutional implementation in the country. The letter, written by Imran Khan’s lawyer Salman Akram Raja, spans nine pages and is titled "State of the Constitution and Implementation of Law in Pakistan."
In his letter, Imran Khan outlines more than 200 cases filed against him and accuses the government of politically motivated actions. He terms his imprisonment, along with the detention of his wife, Bushra Bibi, as a vindictive political move aimed at silencing him and his party. Khan elaborates on the numerous legal and human rights violations he has faced, calling attention to the absence of basic legal procedures such as jail trials and hearings.
The letter also discusses the restrictions placed on his family and legal representatives. Imran Khan stated that despite speaking to his sons on the phone twice in four months, he has been denied access to physical meetings with his wife, Bushra Bibi, and other family members. Furthermore, Khan revealed that he has been confined to a small cell for extended periods and has not been allowed to meet his lawyers for the past two months.
In the letter, Khan highlights the political leaders of PTI, including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Omar Sarfaraz Cheema, Mian Mahmood-ul-Rashid, and Ijaz Chaudhry, who have also faced similar legal challenges. He stresses that the political persecution extends beyond him and is part of a broader attempt to suppress PTI’s leadership and activism.
Khan also referred to significant political events in the country, including the February 8 elections and the November 26 rally, emphasizing the role of the constitutional bench in addressing cases related to military courts and reserved seats. The letter suggests that the judiciary’s intervention is essential to uphold constitutional rights and ensure justice.
The former Prime Minister’s letter underscores concerns over the erosion of legal processes and the implementation of laws in Pakistan, calling for immediate attention to the violations of his and his party members' rights.
