Imran Khan's Medical Examination Delays PTI Protest Amid SCO Summit

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has temporarily postponed its planned protest in Lahore today after the government agreed to allow a medical examination of PTI founder Imran Khan. Dr. Asim Yusuf, Imran Khan’s personal physician, arrived at Adiala Jail to carry out the examination but faced delays in securing permission to meet with the former Prime Minister.

According to sources, Dr. Asim was prepared to meet Imran Khan and conduct the medical check-up, as agreed upon by the PTI and the government. However, jail authorities did not immediately grant permission for the doctor to meet with the PTI chief, causing Dr. Asim to leave without completing the examination.

Protest Postponed, Tensions Remain

The PTI leadership had initially scheduled a protest today in Lahore, but they agreed to temporarily suspend the demonstration after the government accepted the condition for Imran Khan’s medical examination. The party, however, made it clear that the examination was a key demand, and failure to follow through could reignite plans for protests.

PTI officials had been vocal about their concerns for Imran Khan’s health during his detention at Adiala Jail, pressing the government to allow his personal physician access. Dr. Asim Yusuf, who arrived at the prison earlier today, reportedly informed the jail’s security staff of his presence but returned without informing the jail staff after being denied permission to meet Imran Khan.

Tensions Surrounding D-Chowk Protest

While the Lahore protest has been postponed, PTI has announced plans for a demonstration at D-Chowk in Islamabad on October 15, coinciding with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. The PTI has linked the cancellation of this protest to whether or not the government allows Imran Khan to meet his personal physician.

The party has placed conditions on its protests, stating that the government must facilitate Imran Khan’s medical examination and meet other demands related to his well-being during his imprisonment. The outcome of Dr. Asim’s visit, as well as the government's response, could play a pivotal role in whether or not PTI proceeds with the planned D-Chowk protest.

Government's Readiness for Examination

Sources close to the government indicate that they had been prepared to allow the medical examination, but the delay in granting Dr. Asim Yusuf permission to meet Imran Khan has raised tensions. PTI leaders have expressed frustration over what they describe as unnecessary hurdles in ensuring proper medical care for their party leader.

SCO Summit and Heightened Security

The situation is further complicated by the ongoing SCO summit in Islamabad, which has already seen heightened security measures, including roadblocks and restricted access to key areas in the capital. The PTI protest, scheduled for October 15, coincides with this high-profile international event, adding further pressure on the authorities to manage the situation delicately.

As of now, the PTI leadership remains firm in its stance, with the future of the protest hinging on Imran Khan’s medical examination and whether the government meets the party’s conditions.
