SCO Summit: Islamabad Sealed Off with Tight Security, Major Roads Blocked

As the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit begins today in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, strict security measures have been implemented, causing widespread road closures and traffic disruptions across the city. The summit, hosted by Pakistan, has drawn Prime Ministers and other high-level dignitaries from eight member states, prompting heightened security to ensure the event proceeds without incident.

The roads leading to the Red Zone, where the summit will be held, have been fully sealed off to the public. The Islamabad Police and other security agencies have set up roadblocks at various key points, including Park Road at Bani Gala, Rawal Dam Chowk from Club Road, and Faisal Avenue at Faizabad. These closures are part of the security plan to protect the dignitaries attending the high-profile event.

In addition to the Red Zone, other major thoroughfares such as IJP Road to I-8, Kashmir Highway to the Convention Centre, and Bara Kahu to Murree Road have also been blocked. As a result, citizens across Islamabad have been facing severe difficulties in commuting.

Citizen Frustration Grows Over Disruptions

The extensive road closures have sparked frustration among Islamabad’s residents, many of whom have been forced to find alternate routes or delay their travel plans. While the security protocols are in place to ensure the safety of foreign delegates, many citizens are struggling with the sudden traffic restrictions.

Commuters traveling to work, school, and other essential services are experiencing significant delays. Authorities have urged the public to remain patient and cooperate with the security personnel, but many have voiced concerns over the inconvenience caused by the abrupt road closures.

Stringent Security Measures

Given the sensitive nature of the summit, security agencies have left no stone unturned in ensuring that no potential threats disrupt the proceedings. The Islamabad Police, in collaboration with the military, has deployed a large number of personnel to key points across the city. Checkpoints have been set up at entry and exit points, and all vehicles entering the capital are being thoroughly inspected.

In addition to the physical roadblocks, the government has also heightened surveillance and monitoring across the city. Key government buildings, including those in the Red Zone, are under tight security, with Rangers and Special Forces units deployed to maintain order.

SCO Summit Overview

Discussions will focus on regional security, economic cooperation, and the challenges posed by terrorism and extremism.
