Bilawal Bhutto Criticizes Opposition to Federal Constitutional Court

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has criticized the opposition's stance on the Federal Constitutional Court, calling it a result of personal preferences rather than legitimate concerns. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Bilawal stressed that the establishment of a Federal Constitutional Court has been a core part of PPP's judicial reform agenda since 2007 and is a crucial element of the Charter of Democracy, a landmark political agreement signed between major political forces in the country.

He reiterated that judicial reforms remain a key priority for the PPP and that the court’s establishment was mandated by the people, through their elected representatives, to strengthen the judicial system.

Judicial Reforms and PPP’s Vision

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari noted that judicial reforms have long been a part of PPP’s commitment to creating a fair and transparent legal system in Pakistan. The Federal Constitutional Court was envisioned in the Charter of Democracy to handle constitutional matters and enhance the judiciary's independence. He emphasized that these reforms were designed to ensure that the judiciary operates free from political bias or influence.

“The PPP has advocated for this court as part of broader judicial reforms that serve the public interest. Opposing this initiative now, after having supported it previously, demonstrates that the current opposition is rooted in personal likes and dislikes rather than in national interests,” Bilawal said.

Inconsistent Opposition

Bilawal also pointed out that many of the political figures opposing the Federal Constitutional Court today had supported its formation in the past, creating an inconsistency in their stance. “These opponents of the Constitutional Court once endorsed it, but today their opposition is driven by personal interests,” he remarked, urging them to reconsider their position in the broader context of national development and judicial improvement.

People's Mandate

Bilawal emphasized that the mandate to establish the Federal Constitutional Court was given by the public to their elected representatives, and that these reforms reflect the will of the people. "The PPP remains committed to fulfilling this promise and ensuring that Pakistan’s judiciary is strengthened to meet the needs of the nation," he added.

Bilawal concluded by saying that the PPP will continue to advocate for meaningful judicial reforms that enhance democracy and uphold justice, and that opposition based on personal biases will not derail the party's efforts to establish the Federal Constitutional Court.
