POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has sought to ease concerns about strained relations with the United States after Washington announced plans to withdraw around 5,000 troops from Germany. He emphasized that the decision should not be seen as retaliation for recent disagreements between the two countries.
Merz clarified that the troop withdrawal has “no connection” with his earlier criticism of US policy on the Iran conflict, where he questioned Washington’s strategy. He insisted that differences in opinion do not undermine the broader transatlantic partnership.
The German leader reaffirmed that the United States remains a key partner in NATO and stressed the importance of continued cooperation despite political disagreements. He also noted that US troop adjustments in Europe are not new and have been discussed across different administrations.
The announcement of the troop drawdown comes amid rising tensions between Washington and European allies over the handling of the Iran conflict and trade disputes. However, Merz maintained that both countries share long-standing strategic ties that go beyond current disagreements.
He added that Germany remains committed to strengthening European defense capabilities while continuing to work closely with the United States to maintain regional security and stability.
