Islamabad: Legal troubles continue to mount for the leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), with Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, being granted interim bail in connection with the violent protests staged by the party in November.
On Thursday, District and Sessions Court Judge Shabbir Bhatti granted Bushra interim bail until January 13, 2024, against a surety bond of Rs 50,000. The bail is related to multiple cases registered against her following the PTI’s nationwide protests demanding the restoration of the party’s electoral mandate and the reversal of the 26th Amendment.
The protests, which turned violent, began on November 24 and saw widespread clashes between PTI protesters and security forces, particularly in Islamabad’s Red Zone. The protests resulted in at least six fatalities, including a policeman and three Rangers officials. The causes of the deaths remain contentious, with accusations and counter-accusations between the government and opposition regarding law enforcement’s role.
Bushra Bibi is named in several cases related to the November 26 protests. A case has been registered against her at the Tarnol police station, while three additional cases were filed at the Ramna police station.
The PTI leadership, including Imran Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, are facing charges in connection with the protests. The situation escalated further when, on December 13, a journalist filed a case against Gandapur, Bushra, and other PTI leaders.
A week later, the PTI leadership was also charged with murder following the death of a Rangers official, who succumbed to injuries sustained during the protests.
As the legal battles continue, the PTI leadership, including Imran Khan, Bushra, and other high-ranking officials, remain embroiled in court cases with their political future hanging in the balance.
