India’s defence officials have approved a $39 billion purchase of military equipment, including additional French Rafale fighter jets, just days ahead of President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to New Delhi on February 17.
A defence ministry source confirmed that the clearance covers 114 Rafale jets, which will supplement the existing fleet operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF).
“The procurement … will enhance the capability of undertaking air dominance roles across the spectrum of conflict and significantly boost the deterrence capabilities of IAF with long-range offensive strikes,” the ministry said.
The approval came from the Defence Acquisition Council, which includes top military officers and the defence minister, marking the first formal step in the acquisition process for military hardware.
“The majority of MRFA (Multi Role Fighter Aircraft) to be procured will be manufactured in India,” the statement added, highlighting the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative aimed at boosting domestic defence production and private sector investment.
India has been actively reducing its reliance on Russia, its traditional military supplier, and expanding imports from France, the United States, and Israel over the past decade.
Since 2015, India has bought 26 Rafale jets worth $8.7B and in April 2025 announced another deal for 26 jets. The newly approved 114 jets will further strengthen the IAF’s air dominance and strategic deterrence capabilities.
Tensions remain high in the region: during a four-day conflict with Pakistan in May 2025, India lost six jets, including three advanced Rafales.
