Iran Accuses Israel of Sabotaging Nuclear Talks with US Amid Regional Tensions

Iran’s top security official Ali Larijani has accused Israel of deliberately sabotaging ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington over Iran’s nuclear programme, claiming the aim is to ignite regional conflict.

Speaking in Qatar, Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Israel was fabricating pretexts to disrupt the delicate negotiations, which he emphasised are exclusively between Iran and the United States.

“Our negotiations are exclusively with the United States – we are not engaged in any talks with Israel,” Larijani said. “However, Israel has inserted itself into this process, with their intent on undermining and sabotaging these negotiations.”

Larijani argued that Israel’s agenda goes beyond its stated concerns about Iran, citing its September attack in Qatar targeting Hamas officials. He warned that Israel’s actions “gamble not only with Iran, but also Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye,” urging regional leaders to remain vigilant.

Recent US-Iran Talks

Iran and the US recently held indirect talks in Muscat, Oman, aimed at resolving the nuclear dispute, amid heightened US military activity in the region. Plans for a second round of discussions are reportedly underway.

During the ongoing negotiations, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu travelled to Washington to meet former US President Donald Trump, presenting him with proposed “principles” for Iran negotiations. Trump later confirmed that “nothing definitive” was reached, though talks would continue.

Larijani described Tehran’s stance as positive, noting that both sides agreed on one key principle: Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons.

Boundaries of Negotiations

Larijani stressed that the discussions would focus solely on Iran’s nuclear programme, excluding Iran’s missile programme and uranium enrichment levels.

“Our missile program stands entirely separate from the nuclear one… it cannot be part of these negotiations,” he said.
“Similarly, reducing uranium enrichment to zero is impractical, given the technology is also used for civilian purposes such as cancer treatment. Verification, however, remains open to international observers.”

He warned that any US military action, similar to the strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities in June, would prompt Tehran to retaliate against US bases in the region.

Regional Engagement

Before departing Doha, Larijani also met with Muhammad Darwish, head of Hamas’s Leadership Council, to discuss recent developments in Gaza and Israel’s ongoing actions.

The Iranian official’s remarks underscore the fragile nature of regional diplomacy, where Israeli interventions, US pressure, and Iranian assertiveness intersect amid a backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East.
