Indian School Staff Booked for Publicly Shaming Girls Over Periods

A disturbing case of menstrual shaming and abuse has emerged from a school in Maharashtra’s Thane district, where female students were allegedly publicly humiliated, strip-searched, and interrogated by school staff in an attempt to identify which of them were menstruating.

In a statement released by Thane rural police on Wednesday, it was revealed that bloodstains were found in a school toilet, prompting the administration to take extreme measures. Girls from classes 5 to 10 were rounded up in a convention hall, where they were shown images of the stains and asked to confess if they were on their periods.

Those who raised their hands were made to give thumb impressions, and others were reportedly taken to the washrooms, stripped, and physically checked by female attendants.

🔹 Mental Harassment and Coercion Alleged

According to the police, the school principal even accused a student of falsely claiming to be menstruating, forcefully took her thumb impression, and shamed her publicly. Parents said their daughters came home crying, traumatized by the incident.

“The act by the accused amounts to mental harassment to the girls,” said a mother who lodged the complaint.

The case was filed by multiple parents who staged a protest at the school gates, demanding strict legal action.

🔹 Legal Action and Arrests

Police have registered a case against the school principal, four teachers, a staff attendant, and two trustees under the following sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and POCSO Act:

·       Section 354 (assault with intent to outrage modesty of a woman)

·       Section 354B (assault with intent to disrobe)

·       Relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act

Two women among the accused have been arrested and will be produced in court on Thursday.

🔹 Political Response and CM’s Orders

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered strict action against those responsible, according to Water Minister Girish Mahajan, who addressed the matter in the state assembly.

🔹 Ongoing Investigation

Police said they are currently identifying witnesses and gathering more evidence from students and staff. A senior official described the incident as deeply troubling and a violation of child rights, promising a thorough probe.
