POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Lahore: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has issued a stern warning to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regarding their planned February 8 protest, urging them to reconsider their decision. He cautioned that if the protest mimics the disruptions witnessed on November 26, the state will be compelled to take decisive action.
Speaking to the media during the inauguration of a new passport office in Lahore, Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the government’s efforts to improve passport services. He announced the establishment of 14 new passport counters across various cities to streamline the issuance process for citizens.
Combating Illegal Travel
The minister expressed concern over the rising number of people from Gujarat and Faisalabad divisions traveling abroad illegally. He underscored the need for accountability for those facilitating illegal travel and hinted at major reforms within the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
“Action is being taken against those using fake documents to travel abroad. We are happy when Pakistanis go abroad legally,” Naqvi said.
Strengthening US-Pakistan Relations
During the media interaction, Naqvi highlighted the strong bilateral ties between Pakistan and the United States, dismissing rumors circulating on social media as baseless.
PTI Protest and Government's Warning
Responding to questions about the PTI’s announcement to observe Black Day on February 8, the interior minister reiterated his request for the party to refrain from protests.
“If they do not listen to us, as was the case on November 26, then we will take necessary action. The state will not stand idle,” Naqvi warned.
When asked whether he would accept an invitation from the US to meet PTI’s founder, the minister remained resolute but did not elaborate.
As tensions rise ahead of February 8, it remains to be seen whether PTI will heed the government’s warning or press ahead with its planned demonstration.
