Israeli forces carried out intense artillery and helicopter attacks on southern Gaza on Monday, targeting a tent housing displaced Palestinians and killing a five-year-old girl and her uncle, according to Gaza health authorities. The attacks came despite a United States-brokered ceasefire that took effect in October.
The Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis confirmed the tent strike in the al-Mawasi area, reporting that four others, including children, were injured. Since the ceasefire, at least 422 Palestinians have been killed in continued Israeli operations in Gaza.
Israel’s military said it targeted a Hamas fighter “planning to attack Israeli forces in the immediate timeframe,” though no evidence was provided linking the fighter to the tent attack.
Most of Gaza’s two million residents are now living in tents, makeshift shelters, or damaged buildings following years of conflict, with 88 percent of buildings partially or fully destroyed, according to Palestinian authorities. A collapsed home in Maghazi camp also killed a 29-year-old father and his eight-year-old son on Monday. Rescue efforts remain constrained due to fuel shortages and lack of equipment.
The ceasefire, the first phase of which includes prisoner exchanges and the reopening of Gaza’s Rafah crossing with Egypt, has been implemented unevenly. Hamas has freed most captives, while Israel has released nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. However, humanitarian groups warn that Israeli restrictions and the continued closure of Rafah impede aid delivery.
Reports from Israel indicate preparations to reopen the crossing in “both directions,” potentially allowing Palestinians to travel from Gaza to Egypt. Residents expressed cautious optimism. Tasnim Jaras, a student in Gaza City, said it was her “dream that the crossing opens so we can continue our education.” Moaeen al-Jarousha, wounded in the war, said he urgently needs medical care abroad.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to control 53 percent of Gaza and has carried out demolitions in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighbourhood. Israeli strikes were also reported against Hezbollah and Hamas positions in southern and eastern Lebanon.
Humanitarian groups stress that access to medical care, education, and family reunifications is critical for Gaza’s residents. While the potential reopening of Rafah offers hope, the ongoing attacks and occupation continue to devastate the region.
