A Karachi anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Monday granted a four-day physical remand of Chanesar Town Municipal Corporation (TMC) Chairman Farhan Ghani, brother of Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani, in a terrorism and attempted murder case.
Farhan was arrested on Sunday after being accused of leading an assault on a government employee, Hafiz Sohail Jadoon, who was overseeing fibre optic network laying work on Sharea Faisal. Along with his associates Shakeel and Qamar Ahmed, Farhan appeared before the ATC today following the completion of a one-day custody.
During the hearing, the investigation officer (IO) informed the court that the accused had beaten the complainant while he and his team were working on the project. Farhan, who had no legal representation, denied the charges and maintained he was being “falsely accused.”
He claimed he was merely passing by and, as TMC chairman, had the right to inquire about the digging. “I asked for a permission certificate, but they could not produce one,” Farhan said, adding it was his duty “to stop anything illegal.”
The IO stated that the suspects had voluntarily surrendered to police. While police requested a 14-day custody, the court approved only four days and directed the IO to present a progress report at the next hearing on August 28.
The FIR, filed by Jadoon at the Ferozabad police station on Saturday night, alleged that 20-25 men led by Farhan arrived in three vehicles, demanded work be stopped, and upon his refusal, abused, assaulted, and dragged him at gunpoint to a nearby fuel station room where he was beaten further. Police later rescued him and registered the case.
The incident has drawn attention due to Farhan’s political ties, with Saeed Ghani earlier stating his brother and associates would surrender voluntarily and prove their innocence in court.
