KP Chief Minister Challenges Centre as Governor’s Rule Looms Amid Political Tensions

The federal government is reportedly considering the imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), citing “security and governance issues” in the province. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar emphasized that governor’s rule is a constitutional provision, not martial law, and can be implemented if conditions warrant it.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar also reiterated that the option is legally available to the government, noting that discussions typically arise when governance is perceived as weak. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhary advised KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi to avoid political point scoring and cooperate with the Centre on security and administrative matters.

CM Afridi Responds

CM Afridi, however, boldly challenged the federal government, stating, “We are not afraid of governor’s rule. If they are so bold, then let them try and impose it.” He criticized the Centre for not releasing KP’s due share of funds, claiming the province is owed over Rs3,000 billion. “Imagine what we could achieve if these funds were given,” he said, accusing the federal government of discriminatory treatment.

Afridi also highlighted institutional corruption cited in the recent IMF report and defended the provincial government’s efforts to improve security and governance with available resources.

PTI Stance

PTI leaders have warned of the political repercussions if governor’s rule is implemented. PTI MNA Asad Qaiser criticized the federal government for adopting an “undemocratic attitude,” while PTI Chairman Barrister Ali Gohar dismissed the notion, stating that the province does not meet the conditions for such a measure. He also urged that meetings with PTI founder Imran Khan be restored, citing that the leader is being kept in isolation.

Political and Security Implications

The debate over governor’s rule comes amid mounting tensions between the provincial government and the Centre. KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi reportedly discussed the matter with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif last week, alongside key administrative and security issues. The federal government’s consideration of governor’s rule reflects ongoing friction over security, governance, and financial allocations in the province.

As the situation develops, both the federal and provincial governments are closely watching the political and administrative consequences of any move to implement governor’s rule in KP.
