The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced plans to enhance the security of judges across the province, especially those posted in sensitive areas. This move comes as part of a comprehensive security plan formulated by a committee established for the purpose.
The committee has proposed a series of recommendations aimed at ensuring the safety of judges. These include providing additional security at judges’ homes, during their commutes, and at court premises in sensitive areas. The responsibility for determining security-sensitive areas has been assigned to the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).
A key highlight of the recommendations is the provision of bulletproof vehicles for all benches of the High Court. Additionally, District and Sessions Judges’ security has been recommended to be classified under Category A, ensuring top-tier protection.
According to official documents:
- District and Sessions Judges will be accompanied by one head constable and four constables.
- Additional District and Sessions Judges will receive security from two constables.
- Civil Judges, Senior Civil Judges, Judicial Magistrates, Family Court Judges, and Presiding Officers will each have one constable assigned to their security.
If the recommendations are approved by the provincial cabinet, the following deployment of security personnel will be carried out:
- 116 personnel for District and Sessions Judges.
- 180 personnel for Additional Sessions Judges.
- 87 personnel for Senior Civil Judges.
- 390 personnel for Civil Judges.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of judicial officers, particularly those serving in sensitive and high-risk areas. The proposal also aims to reinforce the judiciary’s ability to function effectively without security concerns hindering their responsibilities.
The approval of the recommendations by the cabinet is awaited, which will pave the way for implementing these crucial security measures.
