Mehsud Elders Demand Return of Displaced Persons, End to Military Operations

A jirga of Mehsud tribal elders convened on Friday in Tank district, issuing a strong call for the immediate return of displaced persons to Upper South Waziristan district and the cessation of military operations in the region.

The gathering saw significant participation from tribal elders, political and social leaders, and youth representatives. In a show of unity, the jirga members unanimously decided to convey five critical demands to the Inspector General of Frontier Corps (IGFC) South. A delegation will meet the FC South chief to present these concerns following an invitation from his office.

The jirga’s demands included:

  1. The immediate return of displaced residents to their homes in Upper South Waziristan.
  2. A complete halt to military operations in the area.
  3. An immediate end to mortar shelling in populated regions.
  4. Cessation of deforestation activities in the district.
  5. The withdrawal of what they termed “baseless” FIRs against tribal elders and the immediate release of detained individuals.

The tribal elders emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights of the Mehsud tribe and called on authorities to address their grievances without delay. The jirga members reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful struggle for achieving these objectives and underscored the need for meaningful dialogue to resolve long-standing issues in the region.

The jirga’s demands reflect growing discontent among the Mehsud tribe regarding the ongoing instability in Upper South Waziristan, highlighting the broader challenges of displacement, security operations, and environmental degradation.

This development comes amidst calls from local communities for sustainable peace and rehabilitation in conflict-affected areas of South Waziristan.
