Leaked Audio Reveals Assad-Era Plot to Destabilise Syria: Al Jazeera

An Al Jazeera investigative programme has obtained extensive leaked audio recordings and documents allegedly exposing plans by senior military officers from the regime of ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to destabilise Syria and seek external backing, including coordination with Israel.

The revelations are part of Al-Mutahari (The Investigator), an investigative programme set to air on Wednesday evening. The investigation is based on more than 74 hours of leaked audio recordings and hundreds of pages of documents obtained by Al Jazeera.

According to the investigation, the leaks implicate several high-ranking officers from the former Syrian regime, most notably Brigadier General Suheil al-Hassan, the former commander of the elite Quwwat al-Nimr, commonly known as the Tiger Forces, which played a key role in Assad-era military operations.

The recordings reportedly reveal efforts by former regime figures to regroup after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, secure funding and weapons, and undermine stability in post-Assad Syria. One of the most striking audio clips features a source, identified in the leaks as a hacker or intermediary, assuring al-Hassan of Israeli support.

“The State of Israel, with all its capabilities, will stand with you,” the source is heard telling al-Hassan. In response, al-Hassan says: “There is a level higher than me, Mr Rami is the one who coordinates. And I have dangerous intelligence information.”

The Assad dynasty came to an end a year ago after a swift offensive by allied rebel groups led by current Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, forcing Bashar al-Assad into exile in Russia and ending his family’s 54-year rule.

Following the collapse of the regime, Israel sharply escalated its military actions in Syria. According to conflict monitoring group ACLED, Israel has carried out more than 600 air, drone and artillery strikes across Syria over the past year, targeting airports, air defence systems, fighter jets and other military infrastructure, while also expanding its presence in the occupied Golan Heights and striking locations in Damascus.

The leaked recordings also feature Ghiath Dalla, another former brigadier general, who appears to endorse al-Hassan’s standing among Assad’s traditional support base in Syria’s coastal and mountainous regions.

“My master, Suheil the Tiger, spoke the feeling of the whole mountain and the whole coast,” Dalla is heard saying, referring to areas long considered strongholds of the Assad family.

In other audio segments, al-Hassan expresses frustration over current political developments, describing them as “the flood”. “Our prayers for you all are that this foolishness, this evil, and this blackness called the flood ends,” he says.

The full scope of the alleged plot and its implications will be detailed in the upcoming episode of The Investigator, hosted by journalist Jamal el-Maliki. While excerpts of the leaked material are being aired on Al Jazeera’s platforms on Wednesday, the complete investigation is scheduled for release in mid-January.
