A man has been charged with criminal damage after spray-painting pro-Palestinian slogans on the statue of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in central Parliament Square.

The Metropolitan Police said Caspar San Giorgio, 38, of no fixed address, was charged early Saturday, roughly 24 hours after being arrested for the incident. Officers had detained him within minutes of being alerted to the vandalism, which involved red paint and slogans including “Zionist war criminal,” “free Palestine,” and “stop the genocide.”

The statue, which stands 3.6 metres tall, was cleaned by workers later on Friday. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the act as “completely abhorrent,” praising police for the swift arrest. “Churchill was a great Briton,” the spokesperson said.

The monument has been the target of vandalism in recent years, notably during Black Lives Matter and Extinction Rebellion climate protests in 2020. San Giorgio was due to appear at a London magistrates’ court later on Saturday.

This latest incident highlights ongoing tensions over public monuments and their symbolism, while authorities continue to enforce laws against criminal damage in London.
