Maulana Fazlur Rehman Condemns Violent Behavior in Islamabad, Defends Right to Protest

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has voiced strong criticism of the government's violent response to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest in Islamabad, emphasizing that every political party, including both his own and his opponents, has the right to hold rallies and demonstrations.

Addressing a press conference in Sukkur, Fazlur Rehman expressed his belief that political parties are accountable for their own actions and decisions, regardless of whether they are deemed right or wrong. However, he specifically condemned what he described as the "violent behavior" exhibited by the ruling authorities in Islamabad, following clashes between protesters and law enforcement agencies.

The JUI-F leader raised questions about the actions of the government during the PTI protest. He noted that convoys coming from various provinces were initially allowed to proceed, and at one point, it seemed as though the authorities had decided not to use force. However, when the protesters reached D-Chowk in Islamabad, he questioned why the police resorted to shooting. "When convoys were coming from a province, they were given a way and then they retreated, saying that they did not want to shoot. But when they reached D-Chowk, why did they shoot?" Maulana Fazlur Rehman asked, referring to the violent clashes that broke out during the demonstration.

Fazlur Rehman’s comments reflect growing concerns over the escalating tension between political parties and the state, particularly in the context of PTI's ongoing protests against the government. The situation in Islamabad, where protesters clashed with law enforcement, has sparked debate over the balance between maintaining law and order and respecting citizens' right to peaceful protest.

The JUI-F chief reiterated that peaceful demonstrations should not be met with violence, calling for an end to what he described as excessive force by the authorities. His remarks add to the broader political discourse around the treatment of opposition parties and their supporters during protests.
