POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), made strong remarks defending the idea of a democracy rooted in Islamic values, while also hitting out at various political and sectarian challenges facing the country.
He emphasized that a democracy where the majority is committed to making laws according to the Quran and Sunnah cannot be labeled as "kufr" (unbelief). Rehman critiqued the narrow-minded and emotional issuance of fatwas (religious edicts) by some individuals without fully understanding the context, both locally and internationally. He stressed that to issue meaningful religious rulings, it is vital to comprehend the complexities of the situation.
The JUI chief also highlighted the political and sectarian rifts within Pakistan’s state institutions. Rehman pointed out that these institutions engage in sectarian conflicts but often blame others for the resulting tensions. In a candid statement, he remarked, “We are not ashamed to earn dollars on our blood,” underscoring his frustration with how sectarian divides are perpetuated for political and economic gains.
Rehman also discussed the issue of madrassas (religious seminaries), a cornerstone of JUI’s political base. He declared that madrassas will remain a part of Pakistan's social fabric. "Madrassas are here to stay. They are an integral part of our society, with students attending universities and rising to prominent positions," he stated, warning against attempts to control or dismantle them.
Moreover, he criticized the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, calling it a "fake government" and labeling the recent elections in the province as fraudulent. According to Rehman, May 9, a significant day in recent political history, was an event that led to the provincial government being rewarded with power.
The JUI leader concluded by calling for unity within the country and cautioning against the influence of foreign powers and domestic divisions that hinder progress. He stressed the importance of a government that upholds Islamic values, unity, and accountability.
