Miftah Ismail Announces Legal Action Against PML-N Leaders Over Sugar Allegations

Awam Pakistan Party leader and former finance minister Miftah Ismail has announced his decision to take legal action against the leadership of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for what he called “baseless and politically motivated” allegations regarding his alleged involvement in the sugar export controversy.

Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, Miftah Ismail strongly denied all accusations levelled against him by a PML-N senator and a member of the National Assembly, stating, “If there is any evidence, bring it forward — but do not tarnish my name for political convenience.”

He criticized Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directly, pointing out that “the PM owns two sugar mills,” and alleged that the sugar export decisions were made to serve vested interests. “The issue here is not sugar — the real issue is political expediency,” he added.

Ismail further revealed that Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar was made the chairman of the Sugar Advisory Board for the first time, calling it an unusual move that placed a top political figure in a technical advisory position.

In a particularly strong warning, Miftah demanded an apology from PML-N leader Tariq Fazal Chaudhry for making “false and defamatory statements.” Failing that, he vowed to issue a legal notice in the coming days.

Clarifying his position regarding a project being linked to his name, Miftah said, “I had no knowledge of the project being discussed. It dates back to 2019 — a time when I was actually in jail.” He added that the relevant Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) meeting was held in his absence, and asserted that he “did not earn a single rupee from BISP.”

In recent weeks, tensions between PML-N leadership and its former finance minister have escalated, especially amid growing economic challenges and rising public pressure over the sugar crisis. Ismail’s remarks have exposed deeper fissures within PML-N and brought renewed attention to the alleged mishandling of sugar exports.

Legal analysts believe the upcoming lawsuit could force the PML-N leadership to either present evidence or retract their accusations, potentially creating further embarrassment for the ruling party.
