CRIME
A government primary school in North Waziristan’s Mir Ali subdivision was reduced to rubble earlier this week after unidentified militants planted and detonated explosives inside the building, authorities and local elders confirmed on Thursday. The attack has disrupted the education of more than 600 students who were enrolled at the institution — the only functional primary school in the Khushali area of Ayaz Kot.
The explosion occurred late Monday night, with the powerful blast heard several miles away. A large portion of the school building was destroyed, rendering it unsafe for use. Education officials have since cordoned off the remaining structure, and the district administration is developing an emergency plan to ensure alternate learning arrangements for affected students.
“An Attack on the Future of Children”
Local elders, parents, and teachers expressed outrage and grief over the incident, calling it a direct assault on the community’s hopes and the region’s already fragile education system.
“This school was the only beacon of hope for our children. Its destruction has shocked the entire community,” a local elder told reporters. He added that many families had struggled for years to rebuild their lives amid security challenges, and the attack on the school has renewed fears about the future.
Investigation and Security Measures
Police and security forces reached the site soon after the explosion and collected forensic evidence. According to the initial assessment by the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU), the device was likely detonated using either a remote-controlled mechanism or a timer.
Security officials confirmed that a search operation has been launched in the surrounding areas, though no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The district administration condemned the incident as an “anti-education act,” saying such attacks undermine peace, stability, and development in the region. Officials vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Part of a Pattern of Attacks on Schools
Monday’s attack is the latest in a series of assaults on educational institutions in the region:
- Just weeks ago, Cadet College Wana came under a terrorist attack in South Waziristan.
- In October, an explosion partially damaged a girls’ primary school in Lakki Marwat.
- Last year in May, unidentified militants blew up a private girls’ school in Tehsil Shewa, North Waziristan.
- In May 2023, two government girls’ schools were bombed in Mirali.
While no casualties have been reported in these attacks, the repeated targeting of schools has triggered growing concern among parents and community leaders over the safety of children and the right to education.
As authorities work on emergency measures to restore learning for the displaced students, residents of the area continue to call for stronger security measures and swift accountability.
