The body of a young girl who fell into an under-construction sewer line along with her mother in Lahore was recovered on Thursday, a day after the tragic incident, according to Rescue 1122.
In a statement, Rescue 1122 said its diving team recovered the child’s body from Saggian, approximately five kilometres from Bhatti Chowk, where the incident occurred on Wednesday evening. The rescue operation had continued without interruption since the incident was reported.
Earlier, Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmed said emergency services received a call at 7:32pm on Wednesday reporting that a woman and her daughter had fallen into an open sewer line near Bhatti Chowk.
Meanwhile, a first information report (FIR) has been registered at the Bhatti Gate police station on the complaint of the deceased woman’s father. The FIR, filed under Section 322 (manslaughter) of the Pakistan Penal Code, names the construction project’s manager, safety in-charge and site in-charge for alleged negligence.
According to the FIR, the complainant stated that his son-in-law informed him that his wife and daughter had fallen into an open manhole. Family members reached the area near Data Darbar in the early hours of Thursday, where they were told that the woman’s body had been recovered, while the child was still missing at the time.
The complainant accused the nominated officials of leaving the manhole uncovered due to “negligence and carelessness,” stating that their actions led to the deaths of his daughter and granddaughter.
The woman and her child reportedly fell into the open sewer line after dismounting a rickshaw on Wednesday evening in an area frequented by hundreds of pedestrians, including visitors to Data Darbar.
In the aftermath of the incident, conflicting reports emerged from authorities. Rescue teams initially expressed doubts about the incident, citing low water levels during the early stages of the operation. Some official statements, including those from district management, also shifted blame towards the woman’s husband, prompting senior police officials to order his interrogation.
The role of the project management came under scrutiny as the under-construction sewerage pipeline had been left uncovered in a busy public area.
Earlier on Thursday, Lahore Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran confirmed that the woman’s body had been recovered from the disposal station on Outfall Road. Addressing questions about the water flow, he said the incident occurred during peak hours when the water flow was fast, adding that it later receded as the night progressed.
The tragedy comes amid recurring incidents involving uncovered manholes. Last month, a seven-year-old boy died after falling into an open manhole in Bahawalpur district’s Dhanote town near Lodhran.
