A four-day-long rescue operation in the snow-hit Tirah Valley of Khyber district has been successfully completed, with the main road fully restored for traffic, officials confirmed on Monday.
According to Khyber District Rescue 1122 spokesperson Maqsood Alam, evacuation efforts in Tirah Valley had begun on January 10. However, heavy snowfall on January 22 caused severe disruption, leaving hundreds of families migrating from the area stranded along the route.
The spokesperson said that large numbers of people, including women and children, were trapped in vehicles, particularly trucks transporting temporarily displaced persons (TDPs). Following the worsening situation, rescue operations were launched on January 22 under the directives of higher authorities.
Rescue teams from multiple districts — including Khyber, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, and Nowshera — were mobilised to assist in the operation. Their efforts focused on clearing heavy snow from the main road and safely evacuating stranded citizens.
“After continuous work over four days, the main road connecting Bara to Tirah Valley has now been completely reopened for traffic,” the spokesperson stated.
During the operation, rescue teams successfully evacuated around 2,400 affected individuals and freed approximately 480 vehicles stuck in the snow. In addition, medical assistance was provided to more than 200 injured people and patients who had been trapped in the harsh weather conditions.
Authorities praised the coordinated efforts of rescue teams, noting that timely action helped prevent further casualties amid extreme winter conditions in the mountainous region.
