CRIME

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan Member of National Assembly Dr. Nikhat Shakeel has become the latest victim of online fraud, after her WhatsApp account was hacked by a scammer who then extorted money from her friends and relatives.
According to Dr. Nikhat Shakeel, the fraudster—whom she described as a “Nausarbaz” (con artist)—contacted her posing as a representative of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC). The caller claimed that he needed a verification code to deliver a parcel of official documents related to the organization.
“As soon as I shared the code, my WhatsApp account was hacked,” Dr. Shakeel said. “The fraudster then started contacting my friends and family, demanding money under various pretexts.”
The MNA added that those who confirmed with her before sending money managed to avoid the scam, while some unfortunately transferred funds to the impersonator.
She further noted that the scammer’s detailed knowledge about PMDC documentation was “suspicious and concerning”, raising questions about possible access to official information.
Cybercrime has been on the rise in Pakistan, with lawmakers, journalists, and professionals frequently targeted through phishing and WhatsApp verification scams. Authorities have repeatedly urged the public not to share verification codes or personal details over the phone.
An investigation into the incident is expected to be initiated by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cybercrime Wing.
