MQM Proposes 27th Constitutional Amendment in Senate for Creation of New Provinces

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has announced its intention to introduce the 27th constitutional amendment in the Senate, advocating for the creation of new provinces in Pakistan. During discussions on the 26th constitutional amendment, Senator Faisal Sabzwari emphasized the urgent need to empower local governments or establish new administrative units to address governance issues.

Speaking to the Senate, Sabzwari highlighted that local governments across various provinces have remained ineffective due to a lack of legal empowerment. “Unfortunately, the local governments are not empowered by law. Local governments were not empowered in any of the provinces,” he stated, underlining the necessity for a more robust local governance framework.

The senator acknowledged the contributions of all parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), in the ongoing discussions surrounding constitutional amendments. He referred to comments made by Law Minister Ali Zafar, who expressed concerns about the procedural handling of the amendments. “I believe few of the PML-N, the law minister spoke correctly. The special committee will continue to work, and the issue of local authority will be brought in the 27th constitutional amendment,” Sabzwari added.

The MQM has been vocal about its stance on provincial governance and the need for administrative restructuring in Pakistan. Senator Sabzwari reiterated that “Pakistan needs administrative units (provinces),” advocating for the inclusion of their proposed amendments in the upcoming discussions.

The push for the 27th constitutional amendment comes at a time when various political factions are reevaluating the structure of governance in Pakistan. The MQM's proposal aims to address long-standing issues related to local governance and the representation of citizens at the grassroots level.

As the Senate continues to deliberate on constitutional reforms, the MQM's initiative could pave the way for crucial changes in the administrative landscape of Pakistan, potentially leading to the establishment of new provinces that could enhance local governance and representation.
