The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has wrapped up its final arguments in the high-profile £190 million corruption reference against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. The case, which involves allegations of mishandling funds related to a private housing society, was heard on Tuesday by Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana at Adiala Jail Rawalpindi.
During the session, NAB’s counsel, Advocate Amjad Pervaiz, presented the final arguments. He explained that the case revolves around a confidentiality agreement signed between the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the UK and Pakistan’s Asset Recovery Unit (ARU) on November 6, 2019. He stated that this agreement should not have been kept secret, as the government had no authority to do so, which violates the rules governing the process.
Advocate Pervaiz outlined that the NCA transferred the first installment of £190 million to a liability account of the private housing society on November 29, 2019. However, the cabinet’s approval for this transaction was not obtained until December 2, 2019—seven days after the transfer, contrary to the established procedures. He emphasized that the Rules of Business 1973 were violated, as all agenda items must be shared with cabinet members in advance.
The NAB lawyer also argued that the funds, once received, should have become the property of the state, but instead, the money was diverted to the housing society’s account. This, according to Pervaiz, also violated Section 5 Clause T of the NAB Ordinance.
Furthermore, Advocate Pervaiz pointed out that 240 kanals of land were transferred before the formation of the trust, and no documentation for the transfer or the agreement was presented by the accused during their statements. He also highlighted that correspondence had already begun between the parties before the Asset Recovery Unit had frozen the funds.
The NAB lawyers also submitted relevant rulings from the Pakistani High Court and India’s Supreme Court to support their position in the case.
The court adjourned the hearing until the next day, when the defense lawyers will begin presenting their final arguments in the case, marking another step in the legal proceedings against Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi.
