The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has summoned Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Sindh, Iqbal Memon over serious allegations involving the unauthorized release of an undertrial prisoner accused of corruption.
According to NAB officials, Iqbal Memon is accused of facilitating the release of an irrigation department engineer, who was arrested in multiple corruption cases, without obtaining the mandatory approval of the Chief Minister of Sindh. The engineer was on judicial remand at the time of his release.
Initial findings suggest that the release may have been carried out in exchange for financial compensation, a charge that has triggered a formal investigation by the anti-graft watchdog.
Iqbal Memon has been summoned to appear before NAB Karachi on June 24 and is required to bring all relevant documentation and records related to the case. Sources confirm that NAB has also constituted an inquiry committee under the direction of its Director General to probe the matter in detail.
The engineer in question was allegedly allowed to walk free under the guise of being placed on payroll, a provision typically used in specific legal and security circumstances — none of which reportedly applied in this case.
This case has raised serious questions about administrative misuse of authority within the Sindh bureaucracy, and NAB is expected to expand its investigation to determine whether other officials were complicit or aware of the release.
The development comes amid increasing pressure on provincial administrations to ensure transparency and accountability, especially in high-profile corruption cases linked to government departments.
NAB officials have stated that no one will be spared if found guilty of abusing official powers or undermining the rule of law.
