POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
The National Dialogue Committee, during a meeting held in Islamabad, has proposed the formation of a government negotiation committee in consultation with President Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The meeting was attended by former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Liaquat Baloch, Sher Afzal Marwat, Barrister Saif, Imran Ismail and Shahzad Waseem. Participants discussed the framework and procedure for negotiations between the government and the opposition, along with measures to ease political tensions.
According to the meeting’s announcement, it was suggested that an opposition committee should also be formed to broaden the scope of dialogue, with coordination involving political prisoners. The committee emphasized that structured talks were essential to restoring political stability and rebuilding trust.
The participants further proposed the immediate appointment of opposition leaders in both the Senate and the National Assembly. They noted that public confidence in the government could improve through the release of political workers, the lifting of media censorship, and the withdrawal of cases against political figures.
The committee agreed to continue the dialogue process under the National Dialogue framework. It was also announced that the next meeting of the National Dialogue Committee will be held in Multan.
