Pakistan Introduces Stringent Cybercrime Regulations Targeting Propaganda and Rumors

In a significant move, the Federal Cabinet of Pakistan has approved new regulations under the National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency (NCCIA), which impose severe penalties for propaganda against state institutions and public figures. Offenders could face prison sentences ranging from five to 15 years, alongside substantial fines.

This decision comes after the NCCIA became fully operational, following an 11-month waiting period since its establishment was proposed by the caretaker government in December 2023. The rules mark a critical step in strengthening the country’s cybercrime response, aiming to curb the spread of misinformation, harassment, and malicious rumors on social media platforms.

As part of this initiative, the previously existing FIA cybercrime wings have been dissolved, with affected officers to serve within the new authority for a year. The NCCIA will now have the power to coordinate with international organizations to enhance efforts against cybercrimes, reflecting a commitment to tackle issues that transcend national boundaries.

With these new rules in place, authorities are set to take strict action against those engaging in propaganda that undermines the integrity of state institutions and public figures, signaling a zero-tolerance approach towards cyber harassment and misinformation. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the implications of these regulations will be closely monitored by civil society, activists, and legal experts alike.
