Norwegian Political Party Nominates Imran Khan for Nobel Peace Prize Amid Criticism

Oslo, Norway — In a move that has sparked significant debate, the Norwegian political party Partiet Sentrum has nominated Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan and founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The party made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), stating that they had nominated Imran Khan for his contributions to human rights and democracy in Pakistan. However, the nomination has come under fire, with critics questioning the party's motives.

While Partiet Sentrum did not disclose the identity of the individual who nominated Imran Khan, the announcement has led to accusations that the party is using the nomination as a political tool to garner support from the Norwegian-Pakistani community. Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of the Nobel Institute, suggested that Geir Lippestad, the leader of the party, may be seeking political gain by securing votes in the upcoming Norwegian elections.

Criticism and Backlash

The nomination has stirred controversy in Norway, with many accusing the party of political opportunism. According to NRK News, there are claims that the nomination could be a strategic move to boost the party's popularity among the Norwegian-Pakistani community, where Imran Khan enjoys substantial support.

However, Lippestad has not responded to these criticisms directly, and no official statement has been made by the Oslo-based Nobel Prize Committee regarding the nomination.

Imran Khan's Previous Nobel Peace Prize Nomination

This is not the first time Imran Khan has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2019, he was nominated for his efforts in promoting peace in South Asia, particularly his role in improving relations between Pakistan and India.

Imran Khan has also been embroiled in a political struggle following his ouster from office in April 2022, when he was removed through a no-confidence vote. He denies all allegations brought against him by the government, calling them politically motivated.

Nobel Peace Prize Nomination Process

The Norwegian Nobel Committee receives hundreds of nominations every year, with the selection process taking up to eight months. The committee does not disclose the identities of nominators or nominees during the nomination period, and this year's nomination period concluded on January 31. A total of 338 candidates have been nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, including 244 individuals and 94 organizations.

Though the Nobel Prize committee has not commented on this specific nomination, it remains to be seen whether Imran Khan will make it to the list of official candidates for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.

As the controversy surrounding his nomination unfolds, Pakistan’s former Prime Minister continues to remain a polarizing figure, both domestically and internationally.
