Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) has granted full authority to the Pakistan Army to deliver a “befitting” response to India’s unprovoked attacks, declaring them acts of war under international law.

An emergency session of the NSC, chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, convened in Islamabad on Wednesday. Attended by top military officials, federal ministers, and senior advisors, the meeting came in the wake of Indian missile, air, and drone strikes targeting Pakistani territory.

According to the official communiqué, India launched coordinated attacks on the night of May 6 and 7, targeting Sialkot, Shakargarh, Muridke, Bahawalpur, and Kotli and Muzaffarabad in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The attacks reportedly resulted in the martyrdom of dozens of innocent civilians, including women and children, and destruction of infrastructure, including mosques and the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project.

“These attacks were unjustified, unprovoked, and targeted civilian areas under false claims of terrorist presence,” the NSC statement said.

The forum condemned India’s “cowardly” aggression and extended condolences to the families of the martyrs while offering prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The NSC declared India’s actions a clear violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and a blatant breach of international law, stressing that the attacks endangered thousands of lives, including those on commercial flights from Gulf countries.

“This is an act of war under international law. Under Article 51 of the UN Charter, Pakistan has the right to self-defense,” the statement read.

“Pakistan reserves the right to respond at a time, place, and in a manner of its choosing. The armed forces have been fully empowered to take appropriate action.”

Following the attack, Pakistan retaliated with force, shooting down five Indian aircraft and destroying an Indian Army brigade headquarters and multiple military posts, according to DG ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry. Videos of the destroyed Indian posts were also released to the media.

The NSC called upon the international community to take note of India’s reckless actions and hold New Delhi accountable.

“While Pakistan remains committed to peace with dignity and mutual respect, it will never compromise on its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security,” the NSC stated.
