Pakistan Faces Major Overhaul After Crushing Losses in Cricket World Cup, Says PCB Chairman

A disappointing performance chasing a modest 120-run target led to a dismal 113 for 7, consuming 59 dot balls in the process. This underwhelming display in New York on Sunday has spurred calls for drastic changes within the team.

PCB Chairman Mohsin, expressing his dismay, indicated that the team's situation may require more than just minor adjustments. “I thought the team required minor surgery to start winning matches but now it appears that we have to go for major surgery,” Mohsin was quoted as saying by the Pakistani media in New York.

Mohsin stressed the need to consider players who have been on the sidelines for too long. “It is very disappointing the way we lost to the USA and now this loss to India. We need to now start looking at players beyond those in the team right now,” he said.

Having taken over as chairman in January and subsequently becoming the interior minister in the government, Mohsin emphasized that the PCB has done everything possible to support the players. "Why the team is not performing is something everyone is asking. The World Cup is still on. But obviously, we will sit down and take a look at everything.”

Pakistan’s chances of advancing to the Super Eight stage now hinge on winning convincingly against Canada and Ireland, while also hoping for the USA to lose against India and Ireland. Even then, the decision will likely come down to the net run-rate as both teams could end up with four points each.

The PCB's call for a major overhaul reflects the urgency to rectify the team's trajectory in the World Cup and to address the deeper issues affecting performance.
