Pakistan Faces Surge in Terrorism Linked to Afghan Soil, Security Forces Strike Back

Pakistan has been grappling with a significant uptick in terrorist activities over the past year, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, following the collapse of a ceasefire agreement between the government and the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in November 2022. The latest development sees an increase in attacks claimed by TTP factions, with the banned group accused of using Afghan territory as a launching pad for their operations against Pakistan.

In a major breakthrough, Pakistan's security forces arrested several terrorists who had allegedly entered the country from Afghanistan, planning a significant terrorist attack. Security sources reported the recovery of weapons, including Kalashnikovs, hand grenades, and other firearms from the detained suspects. One of the terrorists confessed that they had crossed into Pakistan from Afghanistan just days before their arrest.

The operation received notable local support, with residents assisting security forces in capturing the terrorists. Defence experts have hailed the community's involvement as a positive step, emphasizing the importance of local cooperation in the fight against terrorism. They also pointed to Afghanistan's growing reputation as a safe haven for terrorist organizations, warning that urgent international action is needed to curb the threat.

The arrest comes just a day after a deadly remotely detonated blast in Balochistan's Khuzdar district, which killed five people and injured ten others. The blast targeted the vehicle of a pro-government tribal elder, Abdul Samad Samālani. Earlier this week, an attack on the Bannu Cantonment in KP resulted in five soldiers' deaths and 13 civilian casualties, including six children, in addition to dozens more injuries.

Pakistan continues to face a deadly rise in terrorism, with the country ranked second in the Global Terrorism Index 2025. The death toll from terrorist attacks rose sharply by 45 percent last year, reaching 1,081 fatalities. February alone saw 79 attacks, with significant losses, particularly in Balochistan, which remains the most volatile region in the country. Security forces responded by intensifying counter-terrorism operations, eliminating 156 terrorists and arresting 66 suspects, while also taking heavy losses in the ongoing conflict.

Experts stress that the root cause of this violence lies in the unchecked presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan. As Pakistan grapples with these security challenges, the international community is being urged to take immediate steps to address the growing threat emanating from across the border.
