Pakistan Urges Global Action Against TTP as Terrorist Attacks Escalate

At a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram, highlighted the escalating threat posed by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a banned militant group now operating with the backing of the Afghan Interim Government (AIG). The TTP, also known as "Fitna al Khawarij" in Pakistan, has intensified its attacks on Pakistani security forces since breaking a ceasefire agreement in November 2022.
Ambassador Akram warned that the TTP is quickly evolving into an umbrella organization, potentially becoming a spearhead for Al-Qaeda’s regional and global terrorist objectives. The growing collaboration between the TTP and secessionist groups like Majeed Brigade poses a significant danger to regional stability, he added.
"Pakistan is ready to cooperate with international organizations to eliminate this growing threat," Akram stated, urging the world to recognize the danger posed by the TTP.
Beyond the threat of terrorism, Akram raised concerns about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. With nearly 23.7 million Afghans in need of urgent assistance, the envoy called for immediate international aid. Pakistan emphasized the importance of reviving Afghanistan’s economy, particularly its banking system, to ease the suffering of its people.
Akram also expressed dismay over the Afghan interim government’s human rights violations, particularly its treatment of women and girls, and called for greater political inclusivity in the country.
As Pakistan continues to grapple with rising terrorist activity—59 attacks were reported across the country in August alone—the need for global cooperation against terrorism has become more pressing than ever. Ambassador Akram reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and stability, urging the international community to engage with the Afghan government while ensuring that the Taliban complies with its international responsibilities.
In a final statement, Akram suggested that future global engagement with the Taliban be guided by clear steps outlined in the recommendations of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Coordinator, including counter-terrorism measures, human rights commitments, and political inclusivity.
