POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Pakistan has made a powerful appeal to the United Nations Security Council, demanding immediate action to address the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. During a meeting on Friday, the Pakistani delegate to the UN, Asim Iftikhar, strongly condemned Israel's actions in Gaza, describing them as a campaign of displacement, ethnic cleansing, and destruction rather than a war. He emphasized that the international community must unite to uphold the UN Charter and international law in the face of this ongoing crisis.
In his speech, Asim Iftikhar called the situation in Gaza a decisive moment in history, questioning whether the Security Council would live up to its responsibilities or ignore the tragedy unfolding before them. He urged the council to take action to end the bloodshed and relieve the suffering of innocent civilians, including men, women, and children, who have been caught in the crossfire.
Pakistan's representative also reiterated the country's longstanding demand for full membership for Palestine in the United Nations. He stressed that Palestinian membership was not only a moral imperative but would serve as a firm guarantee for the realization of a two-state solution, providing hope for peace and justice for the Palestinian people.
In addition to calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, Asim Iftikhar urged the Security Council to play an active role in ending the inhumane blockade of Gaza. He further called for an independent and transparent investigation into the targeting of medical infrastructure and other potential war crimes committed during the conflict. To ensure the delivery of aid and protection for civilians, Pakistan also urged the establishment of safe and stable humanitarian corridors in Gaza.
The Pakistani delegate reiterated that the two-state solution process, based on relevant UN resolutions, is the only path to peace. This solution would empower the Palestinian people to achieve their right to self-determination and secure a just and lasting peace for the region.
Pakistan's call for urgent action from the Security Council highlights the growing international concern over the worsening situation in Gaza and the need for collective global efforts to bring an end to the violence and suffering.
