PM Shehbaz Arrives in China for SCO Summit, Meets Xi to Launch CPEC-II

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Tianjin, China, on Saturday to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, terming the visit “historic” as Pakistan formally launches the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC-II).

The summit, scheduled for Sunday and Monday, will bring together over 20 world leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The gathering is being hailed as a powerful show of Global South solidarity.

PM Shehbaz, accompanied by Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, said he looks forward to enhancing Pakistan-China ties, deepening regional cooperation, and strengthening multilateralism.

According to the Foreign Office, the Prime Minister will hold separate meetings with President Xi and Premier Li Qiang to discuss “multifaceted dimensions” of bilateral relations, including trade, investment, security, and the advancement of CPEC Phase-II. The visit will also feature Shehbaz’s participation in an 80th anniversary military parade in Beijing commemorating the World’s Anti-Fascist War.

He is also set to interact with Chinese corporate leaders and address a Pakistan-China B2B Investment Conference in Beijing to promote trade and investment opportunities.

The Foreign Office emphasized that the visit reflects the importance both nations attach to their “All Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership” and to advancing Phase-II of CPEC, which focuses on industrial cooperation, agricultural technology, and modern infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also arrived in China on his first visit since 2018, signaling a potential thaw in strained ties with Beijing. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are among other prominent leaders attending.

On the sidelines of the summit, Putin is expected to hold talks with Erdogan on the Ukraine conflict and meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss Tehran’s nuclear programme, amid renewed Western pressure.

The SCO, which includes China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran, and Central Asian states, has emerged as a key Eurasian platform for security, trade, connectivity, and cultural cooperation. With the formal launch of CPEC-II and Pakistan’s active engagement in SCO deliberations, Islamabad aims to bolster its role in shaping regional peace and prosperity.
