POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers have begun resigning en masse from the National Assembly’s standing committees following instructions from party founder Imran Khan, in protest against the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) disqualification of numerous PTI members over the May 9 riots.
On Thursday, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan confirmed his resignation from four committees — Law and Justice, Human Rights, IT, and the House Business Advisory Committee. Speaking to Dawn.com, Gohar said, “I resigned from the committees based on the instructions of the PTI founder and the political committee. I submitted my resignation to the speaker’s office.”
Chief Whip Malik Aamir Dogar also announced his resignation on X (formerly Twitter), submitting resignations from the committees on Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, the Public Accounts Committee, Energy (Power Division), and Rules of Procedure and Privileges. “I am a true soldier of Imran Khan, and no position holds more meaning than my leader. My politics is for Imran Khan’s mission and Pakistan’s true independence,” Dogar declared.
NA Director General (Media) Zafar Sultan Khan confirmed that 18 PTI members, including Gohar and Dogar, have so far resigned from standing committees. He said PTI lawmakers currently hold memberships in 34 standing committees. The resigning members include:
- Amjad Ali Khan
- Sahibzada Sibghatullah
- Mahboob Shah
- Junaid Akbar
- Gohar Ali Khan
- Shahzada Muhammad Gustasap Khan
- Ali Jadoon
- Mujahid Ali
- Malik Anwar Taj
- Fazal Muhammad Khan
- Sajid Khan
- Arbab Amir Ayub
- Asif Khan
- Sheikh Waqas Akram
- Arshad Sahi
- Malik Aamir Dogar
- Shabir Ali Qureshi
- Awais Jhakkar
Earlier, Ali Asghar Khan and Faisal Amin had also sent resignations as committee members to NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.
A statement from Dogar reiterated that PTI MNAs were acting on Imran Khan’s call. “Many members have submitted their resignations to the National Assembly Secretariat,” he said.
However, a senior NA official told Dawn.com on condition of anonymity that the Speaker had not yet received any resignation letters.
The resignations follow a late-night PTI political committee meeting chaired by senior leaders, which concluded at 3:30am on Wednesday. Analysts say the move signals a new phase of confrontation between PTI and the ruling coalition, as the party continues to challenge disqualifications and push for fresh elections.
