Sahibzada Hassan Raza Appointed Acting Chairman of Sunni Ittehad Council

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday appointed Sahibzada Hassan Raza as the acting chairman of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), following the disqualification of the party’s head, Sahibzada Hamid Raza.

The decision was taken in accordance with the constitution of the Sunni Ittehad Council, with the ECP issuing a formal notification confirming Hassan Raza’s appointment. According to the notification, he will serve as acting chairman until the intra-party by-elections are held.

Sahibzada Hamid Raza, who previously led the SIC, was convicted by an Anti-Terrorism Court in connection with the May 9 riots. Following his conviction, the ECP issued a notification disqualifying him from holding office, creating a leadership vacuum in the party.

The appointment of Sahibzada Hassan Raza is intended to ensure continuity in the party’s leadership as the SIC navigates a turbulent political landscape and prepares for an internal leadership contest.

The Election Commission emphasized that Hassan Raza’s appointment is temporary, and the party is required to conduct intra-party elections in due course to elect a permanent chairman.

The development comes at a time when the May 9 cases continue to affect the political fortunes of PTI and its allied groups, with several leaders facing convictions, disqualifications, and ongoing trials.
