Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif has congratulated Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Islamic Republic.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (Pakistan) on Tuesday, the premier sent a letter to the Iranian leader expressing his good wishes and pledging continued collaboration between the two neighbouring countries.

The development follows the recent decision by Iran’s Assembly of Experts (Iran) to appoint Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new supreme leader after the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.

Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed in coordinated strikes carried out by United States and Israel against Iran earlier this month.

Condolences and solidarity

In his letter, the prime minister extended heartfelt condolences over the death of the former Iranian leader.

He described the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as a tragedy that deeply saddened the people of Pakistan.

“The martyrdom of the revered Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran has deeply saddened the people of Pakistan, who stand in solidarity with the leadership and people of Iran during this difficult time,” the prime minister said.

Shehbaz Sharif also expressed confidence that Mojtaba Khamenei would guide Iran towards “peace, stability, dignity and prosperity” in the years ahead.

Emphasis on Pakistan–Iran relations

The prime minister highlighted the strong historical and cultural ties between the two neighbouring countries.

He said relations between Pakistan and Iran were rooted in shared faith, history, culture and linguistic connections.

Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s determination to continue working closely with the Iranian leadership in order to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

“Pakistan remains committed to working closely with the Islamic Republic of Iran to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across all spheres for the benefit of our two brotherly peoples,” the letter stated.

Messages from Pakistani leadership

The prime minister also publicly congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei in a message posted on the social media platform X.

“I congratulate his eminence Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei on his assumption of the responsibilities of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari also extended congratulations to the Iranian leader.

In his message, Zardari expressed hope that the leadership transition would lead to improved stability and conditions across the region.

The messages from Pakistan’s top leadership reflect Islamabad’s support for Iran during a period of heightened regional tensions and reaffirm the longstanding diplomatic ties between the two countries.
