PM Shehbaz Directs Review of Electricity Tariffs, Energy Sector Reforms Discussed

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday chaired a high-level meeting of the private sector working group for the energy sector, focusing on electricity pricing, transmission reforms, and economic development.

The Prime Minister directed the Minister for Power Division to submit recommendations in consultation with relevant stakeholders to bring electricity charges to an appropriate and regionally competitive level for industries.

The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Mosaddiq Malik (Climate Change), Ahad Khan Cheema (Economic Affairs), Muhammad Aurangzeb (Finance and Revenue), Attaullah Tarar (Information and Broadcasting), Sardar Owais Ahmed Khan Leghari (Power Division), Ali Pervez Malik (Petroleum), Bilal Azhar Kayani (State for Finance and Railways), Special Assistant to the PM Haroon Akhtar, and senior government officials.

During the session, the Energy Committee, chaired by Shahzad Saleem, presented recommendations regarding tariff structures, challenges in power transmission, reasonable electricity rates, and measures to enhance the reliability of the power transmission and voltage system.

The Prime Minister appreciated the committee’s efforts and emphasized that a national program for economic development would be prepared once recommendations from all sectoral working groups are compiled.

“Improving the power transmission system is a top priority, and the government is making efforts to ensure industries have access to electricity at competitive rates,” the Prime Minister said.

The meeting highlighted the importance of private sector collaboration and technical reforms to enhance energy efficiency and support sustainable economic growth.
