PM Shehbaz Meets Chaudhry Nisar, Invites Him Back to PML-N

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday visited the residence of veteran politician Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, seeking to reconcile with the long-disgruntled former federal interior minister and inviting him to rejoin the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

According to sources, the meeting was cordial but politically significant, with both leaders discussing the current political landscape and “other important matters.” Shehbaz reportedly began the conversation by asking, “Chaudhry Sahib! You have forgotten us.” To which Nisar replied, “No, Mian Sahib! It is just that my condition has not been good.”

Sources suggest the prime minister officially invited Nisar to return to the party fold, but Nisar did not give a definitive response, requesting more time to consider the proposal.

Nisar's Journey Away from PML-N

Once a central figure in the PML-N, Chaudhry Nisar was closely associated with the party for over 34 years. However, he parted ways in 2018, citing differences with the leadership and decisions made “according to his conscience.”

In the 2018 general elections, Nisar contested as an independent candidate from four constituencies in Rawalpindi—both National and Provincial Assembly seats—but did not win a national seat.

He had also claimed at the time that "political orphans" were prioritized over loyal members when party tickets were distributed, expressing discontent with how the PML-N was being managed.

Despite speculation over his political future, Nisar refused to join the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), even with a personal relationship with former Prime Minister Imran Khan, maintaining a stance of political independence.

Political Implications

The meeting between Shehbaz and Nisar comes amid growing internal and external political pressures on the ruling coalition. Reconciliation with seasoned politicians like Nisar could help the PML-N strengthen its ranks and reposition ahead of future electoral battles.

The visit has sparked speculation about whether Nisar is preparing for a political comeback under the PML-N banner, potentially impacting the party’s dynamics in Punjab, especially in Rawalpindi division where he still holds influence.

For now, Nisar remains non-committal, and political observers are keenly watching whether this reunion will materialize or remain a symbolic gesture.
