PTI to Keep Using Constitutional Forums, Says Sheikh Waqas Akram

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Secretary Information Sheikh Waqas Akram has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to using constitutional and democratic forums to raise its voice, condemning what he called the ruling party’s authoritarian behavior in the Punjab Assembly.

Speaking to the media, Akram criticized the recent suspension of 26 opposition MPAs during the provincial budget session, saying it was an attempt to silence legitimate dissent.

“If a budget is passed that goes against the interests of farmers, the people will protest — and they have every right to,” Akram said.

He noted that the opposition vigorously protested during the Punjab Assembly’s budget session, adding that raising slogans and demanding accountability is a global parliamentary norm.

🚫 Targeting of Opposition

He denounced the suspensions of PTI lawmakers, stating that even the parliamentary leader’s voice was not heard during the budget debate.

“The Speaker is suspending members just to please the Chief Minister,” he remarked, calling the move a breach of democratic norms.

Akram also condemned the removal of four opposition-led standing committee chairpersons, warning that more committee heads may face similar no-confidence motions.

“In the Charter of Democracy, these same parties had agreed to give committee chairmanships to opposition members. Now they’re backtracking on their own commitments,” he added.

Despite the political setbacks, Sheikh Waqas made it clear that PTI remains undeterred:

“Even if all committees are taken from us, it won’t make any difference. We will keep raising our voice on all constitutional forums,” he asserted.

📌 Context

His remarks come amid rising political tensions in Punjab, where the PML-N-led government is facing accusations of suppressing dissent through legislative power plays. The opposition is increasingly vocal over what it describes as targeted suppression of PTI’s institutional presence in the Assembly, especially after multiple no-confidence motions and references to the Election Commission were announced.
