POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
A significant meeting between Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leadership was held to discuss the ongoing negotiations, with both parties addressing key issues that have been hindering progress.
According to sources, the meeting focused on the demands and reservations of the PPP, particularly concerning the Punjab power-sharing formula, which has become a major point of contention. The PPP's leadership raised concerns over the full implementation of the written agreement between the two parties, emphasizing the need for clarity and commitment to the terms laid out.
In response, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, representing the PML-N, assured the PPP leadership that their concerns would be addressed and the reservations would be removed. Despite these assurances, sources say that matters between the two parties remain unresolved, especially when it comes to the delicate issue of power distribution in Punjab, which has historically been a stronghold for the PML-N.
The PPP's leadership is insistent on ensuring that the Deputy Prime Minister’s role is fully enacted in accordance with the agreement, with an emphasis on maintaining transparency and fairness in the power-sharing arrangement. The PML-N, on the other hand, has requested additional time to consult with the PPP and resolve the differences.
In light of the ongoing deliberations, the PML-N has asked for more time until mid-January to finalize consultations with the PPP leadership. This period will be crucial in determining whether both parties can come to a mutually acceptable understanding or if further negotiations will be necessary.
As the talks progress, both the PML-N and PPP are working to bridge their differences, with the goal of ensuring political stability and unity in the face of the upcoming challenges. However, the resolution of key issues, including the power-sharing formula, remains a central hurdle that both parties must overcome.
The continued discussions reflect the complex nature of coalition politics in Pakistan, where balancing power between different political factions and regions remains a critical task.
